Frederick Jones serves as Design Director for The Haskell Company’s Planning and Design initiative supporting design through implementation. He is a professional transportation planner with two decades of public and private sector experience for a variety of community planning and mobility projects. His expertise includes active transportation and complete streets, urban design, placemaking, transit planning and accessibility, public engagement, and storytelling. He also brings experience in land use development, coding, and regulatory issues. Mr. Jones’ training in anthropology led to his career in planning as he believes “urban planning is anthropology.”
Mr. Jones sits on the National Complete Streets Coalition Steering Committee as part of Smart Growth America. He previously served as Chair for the Downtown Development Review Board. Most recently, he served as Vice Mayor of Neptune Beach, which was recognized as having one of the best Complete Streets Policies of 2018. There he initiated several strategic planning initiatives including a Citywide Visioning plan, the implementation of an active transportation network (including the first city in Florida to have its portion of the East Coast Greenway finished), and a form-based zoning code update. In 2019, he provided federal testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to improve our nation’s roadway safety and incorporate better performance measures. He has made numerous presentations on urban mobility and transit alternatives along with placemaking within the urban context, throughout the country as a keynote speaker at various conferences and community gatherings. As a senior transit planner with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), he oversaw JTA’s Complete Streets program aimed at improving first and last mile accessibility and safety of JTA’s newly designed transit system.
Mr. Jones is a Certified Planner with a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the Florida State University.
